Ascending the hall: "Walking, sitting, and lying down—always right in the midst of it. When being an ox, one must pull the plow and drag the harrow; when being a horse, one must bite the bit and bear the saddle. As a person, tracing things from beginning to end, one does not seek from the sages, nor does one value one's own numinous nature—whether under three rafters or in the midst of the bustling marketplace. Becoming a buddha and acting as a patriarch, wearing fur and bearing horns, ascending to heaven, entering hell, carrying an iron cangue, and taking iron blows—none of this is outside one's lot. If hundreds of thousands of years later you stumble into a stubborn fellow, fist and kick responding to each other, with nostrils piercing high heaven, you cannot blame this mountain monk either. Why is this? A thief has no specific stock; they just swindle each other."
