上堂，僧問：「德山托鉢，意旨如何？」師云：「無意旨。」進云：「因什麼托鉢下僧堂？」師云：「要行便行，要坐便坐。」乃舉：「雪峰和尚示眾云：『盡大地撮來如粟米粒大，拋向面前，漆桶不會，打鼓普請看。』」師云：「遮老子三登投子、九到洞山，做盡計較，末後却向鼇山店裏打箇沒折合，放聲道：『今日始是鼇山成道！今日始是鼇山成道！』便將大地人物作自己受用，致令千戴之下凌辱宗風。烏巨與麼告報，不是抑他雪峰，且要天下衲僧向後各各自有生涯，莫總作遮野狐精見解。」喝一喝，下座。

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "What is the meaning of Deshan carrying his bowl?" The Master said: "There is no meaning." The monk asked further: "Why did he carry his bowl down to the monks' hall?" The Master said: "When he wanted to walk, he walked; when he wanted to sit, he sat." He then cited: "Venerable Xuefeng instructed the assembly, saying: 'Taking the whole earth and pinching it together, it is as big as a grain of millet. Thrown before your faces, the pitch-black bucket does not understand; strike the drum and call all out to look.'" The Master said: "This old fellow went up to Touzi three times and visited Dongshan nine times, exhausting every calculation, but in the end he struck a bad deal at the tavern on Mount Ao, crying out aloud: 'Only today have I attained the Way at Mount Ao! Only today have I attained the Way at Mount Ao!' Thereupon he took the people and things of the great earth for his own enjoyment, causing the style of the lineage to be humiliated even after a thousand generations. In notifying you like this, Wuju is not belittling Xuefeng, but simply wants the patch-robed monks of the realm each to have their own livelihood hereafter, and not make this wild-fox spirit understanding altogether." Giving a shout, he descended from the seat.
