Ascending the hall for the city ward's presentation of the register, a monk asked: "Having arrived at the treasure mountain, one must not return empty-handed. What is the treasure of Jingshan?"
The Master said: "Those with eyes see it."
The monk continued: "Perfectly round and brilliantly radiant, on this side and that side it touches everywhere."
The Master said: "The sea god knows its value, but does not know its price; it is left to the human world to illumine the night with light."
The monk continued: "Do you know it, Venerable Sir?"
The Master said: "If this old monk knew, I would explain it to you, elder."
The Master then said: "Last year was the first assembly for the city ward's Water and Land Retreat; this year, the register is presented in the first assembly of the Arhats. If you recognize the person from last year, then that is the matter of this year. Between this year and last year, it is neither new nor old. The drums roll together in testimony; everyone's eyebrows bristle upright. In Uttarakuru it strikes the third watch; in Aparagodānīya the sun has not yet set. Those who make donations to you are not called fields of merit; those who offer support to you fall into the three evil paths. Do you understand? 'Walking to where the water ends, sitting to watch when the clouds arise.'"
He also cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou, 'What is the path that is not mistaken?' Zhaozhou said, 'Illuminating the mind and seeing one's nature is the path that is not mistaken.'"
The Master said: "Zhaozhou's eyes looked to the southeast while his intention lay in the northwest; it was very much like a fox clinging to its burrow—what delight is there in that? If someone were suddenly to ask Jingshan, 'What is the path that is not mistaken?', I would simply say to him: 'Every household's gate leads through to Chang'an.'"
