上堂，舉：「僧問風穴：『語默涉離微，如何通不犯？』穴云：『長憶江南三月裏，鷓鴣啼處百花香。』風穴老和尚將白麫和麩殼糶了，引得後來人徒向百花香處作道理，成群作隊外邊打之遶。徑山則不然，忽有問：『語默涉離微，如何通不犯？』即對他道：『置將一問來。』」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Fengxue, 'Speech and silence involve transcendence and subtlety. How can one pass through without violation?' Fengxue said, 'I always remember the third month in the south of the river, where partridges cry and a hundred flowers are fragrant.'"
[The Master said:] "Old Venerable Fengxue sold out white flour mixed with bran husks, leading later people to make theories in vain toward the place where the hundred flowers are fragrant, forming crowds and making detours on the outside. Jingshan is not so. If someone were suddenly to ask, 'Speech and silence involve transcendence and subtlety. How can one pass through without violation?', I would straightaway say to him, 'Set aside bringing a question.'"
