Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "Letting go deliberately separates by a thousand mountains; holding fast for no reason also deceives oneself. The thousand-handed Mahākāruṇika can hardly feel it out; the iron ox crashes through Zhaozhou's barrier. What is Zhaozhou's barrier?"
The Master said: "People above heaven and below heaven cannot pass through."
The monk continued: "What is it like when one cannot remain in a place where there is a Buddha?"
The Master said: "Vast and boundless above the head."
The monk continued: "How about running past quickly where there is no Buddha?"
The Master said: "Meeting people three thousand leagues away, do not mention it mistakenly."
The monk continued: "Then I shall not go."
The Master said: "Zha!"
The monk continued: "Plucking willow catkins, plucking willow catkins—what about that?"
The Master said: "Ding one, zhuo two."
The monk continued: "The golden-haired lion shakes its tail."
The Master then laughed, and the monk bowed. The Master then said: "Where there is a Buddha, one cannot remain—the two horns of the iron ox of Shan Prefecture are exposed. Where there is no Buddha, run past quickly—the nostrils of the Persian from the Southern Seas are large. Three thousand leagues away, plucking willow catkins—planting beans originally produces rice and hemp." He took up his staff and said: "Zhaozhou has come!" He then struck once and descended from the seat.
