Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Touzi, 'Vaguely like a crescent moon, faintly like three stars, heaven and earth cannot contain it—where do you, Master, clarify it?' Touzi said, 'What did you say?' The monk said, 'I imagine you, Master, only have ripples on clear water, and surely have no sky-surging waves.' Touzi said, 'Idle words.' Xuedou brought this up and said, 'Old Buddha Touzi did not say he did not know; yet examining it closely, they are truly separated as heaven from earth. As soon as he asked, strike him right along with his voice!'"
The Master said: "The ground is secure and secret; the Buddha's eye cannot pry into it. Devising strategies within the tent, deciding victory a thousand leagues away—credit that to old man Touzi. This monk also understood knocking at the gate and striking the rhythm, coming straight up to the doors and house, but he just could not put his hands and feet into it. When Xuedou said, 'Strike him right along with his voice,' that too was drawing the bow after the thief has passed."
