Ending the summer retreat, he ascended the hall. A monk asked, "What is the correct dharma eye?" The master said, "Straw sandals without a fault." [The monk] advanced and said, "What about when the Venerable says 'a broken, broken basin'?" The master said, "This old monk has never moved his tongue." [The monk] advanced and said, "These words have already spread throughout the world." The master said, "Listening to empty sounds from a ladle divination." The master then said, "Wuju's ending of the summer retreat today merely follows the yellow-faced old fellow's talking-point of two thousand years ago. Testing a wax doll, thoroughly clear as ice; guarding the precept jewel, completely without crack. Only the exposed pillar and the lantern refuse to enter this association. Why? Their minds have always been like iron, completely refusing to be ordered about."
