Having recovered from illness, he ascended the hall: "A single leaf drifts in the air, ten thousand trees turn to autumn; reflecting on conditions of light and shade rushing like a swift river. If one understands the meaning within this, one sits cutting off the thousand differences at the pinnacle. For several days, this mountain monk has seemed sick yet not sick, seemed well yet not well, seemed dead yet not dead. Discharging feces and urine in the abbot's quarters, opening eyes wide with mad words and sleep-talk, truly unable to distinguish east from west or north from south, unable to seek life, unable to seek death. Even old fellow Śākya, the compassionate father of the four kinds of beings and king of physicians in the triple realm, cannot find where this sickness arises. Right at such a moment, if someone can save me, this mountain monk will prepare a cup of mint soup to moisten his mouth; if you cannot save me, it is like people climbing a mountain, each exerting their own effort. King Yama is not your father; one day he will beat your ghostly buttocks to demand your meal money—do not say I did not tell you!"
