1.91

上堂：「牛頭橫說竪說，不知有向上關棙子。有般漆桶輩，東西不辨南北不分，便問：『如何是向上關棙子？』何異開眼尿床？華藏有一轉語：不在向上向下，千手大悲摸索不著，多時雨寒無處晒㫰，今日普請布施大眾。」良久云：「達磨大師無當門齒。」

Ascending the hall: “Niutou spoke horizontally and spoke vertically, not knowing there is a pivot beyond. There is a sort of lacquer bucket who cannot distinguish east from west or tell south from north, and immediately ask, ‘What is the pivot beyond?’ How does this differ from wetting the bed with eyes wide open? Huazang has a turning phrase: it is neither beyond nor below; the Thousand-Handed Great Compassionate One cannot grope it. For a long time it was rainy and cold with nowhere to sun it; today I universally distribute it as alms to the great assembly.” After a long pause, he said, “Great Master Bodhidharma has no front teeth.”
