The master then said: "Before Kāśyapa's gate, everyone steps on it, but when asked, they immediately say they do not know. Brought by the old barbarian, everyone knows it exists, but when questioned, they immediately say they do not understand. Patch-robed monks are like hedgehogs—there is no place for you to get close. Why then, upon hearing the sound of the bell, does each put on the seven-strip robe? If you understand in this manner, purely delighting in the transformation of non-action and restoring the customs of remote antiquity, then you will see plowing fields and digging wells, working at dawn and resting at dusk, naturally not daring to violate the seasons or miss the times. Although this is so, in the end, what is taken as verification?" Striking the whisk, [he said,] "The crane dances at Jiugao beyond the Majestic Voice; flowers blossom on the three isles at the beginning of the Great Lump."
