1.48

上堂，舉：「楊岐問慈明：『幽鳥語喃喃，辭雲入亂峯時如何？』明云：『我行荒草裏，汝又入深村。』岐云：『官不容針，更借一問得麼？』明便喝，岐云：『好一喝。』明又喝，岐亦喝，明連喝兩喝，岐便禮拜。」師云：「下喬木，入幽谷，養子之緣，慈明為甚麼連喝兩喝？」

Ascending the hall, he brought up [the following]: "Yangqi asked Ciming: 'When the secluded bird chatters and leaves the clouds to enter the scattered peaks, how is it?' Ming said, 'I walk in the wild grass, and you again enter the deep village.' Yangqi said, 'An official allows no needle; may I borrow another question?' Ming immediately shouted. Yangqi said, 'A fine shout!' Ming shouted again; Yangqi also shouted. Ming shouted twice in succession, and Yangqi then made prostrations." The master said: "Leaving the tall trees and entering the deep valley—the condition for raising a child. Why did Ciming shout twice in succession?"
