8.18

解夏上堂，拈主丈云：「所修行願，所證法門，一一具足，因甚入夏以來，不知米裡有蟲？若下得一轉語，許爾破和合僧、出佛身血；不然……」卓主丈：「唯知砧杵裏，有此斷腸人。」

Ascending the hall for concluding the summer retreat, he took up his staff and said: "The practices and vows cultivated, the Dharma gates realized—each and every one is complete. Why is it that ever since entering the summer retreat, you have not known there are worms in the rice? If you can deliver a turning phrase, I will permit you to break up the harmonious saṃgha and shed the Buddha's blood; if not..." He struck his staff: "Only knowing that amidst the pounding blocks and pestles, / there is this person whose heart is broken."
