9.85

上堂，舉：「溈山和尚問仰山：『臨濟道：「石火莫及，電光罔追。」從上諸聖以何法示人？』仰山云：『和尚作麼生？』溈云：『凡有言說皆非實義。』仰云：『官不容針，私通車馬。』溈云：『如是如是。』」師拈云：「是則是，父子投機，如水入水，惟恐歲月已過，久而成弊。莫有救得此弊者麼？」卓主丈。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up [the case]: "Venerable Guishan asked Yangshan: 'Linji said: "The spark from a flint cannot catch up, the flash of lightning cannot overtake." With what Dharma did the sages of the past instruct people?' Yangshan said: 'What does the Venerable say?' Guishan said: 'Whatever can be stated is not the true meaning.' Yangshan said: 'The official does not allow a needle, but the private allows carts and horses.' Guishan said: 'Just so, just so.'" The Master took this up and said: "It is indeed so; father and son tallying with each other is like water entering water. My only fear is that as years and months go by, in time it becomes an illness. Is there anyone who can remedy this illness?" He struck with his staff.
