上堂僧問。如何是溈仰宗。師云。一棬攣跳不出。進云。如何是臨濟宗。師云。一棒一條痕。進云。如何是雲門宗。師云。目前薦取。進云。如何是法眼宗。師云。山河大地。大地山河。進云。如何是曹洞宗。師云。黑狗爛銀蹄。白象昆命騎。進云。未審。和尚宗風。又作麼生。師云。別時來向爾道。師乃云。山雲冉冉。江水茫茫。正不居位。偏不涉傍。顯而不露。隱而彌彰。猿啼古木音聲急。鶴宿枯松夢寐長。

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "What is the Guiyang school?" The Master said: "Curling into a ball, one cannot leap out." The monk continued: "What is the Linji school?" The Master said: "One blow of the staff, one welt." The monk continued: "What is the Yunmen school?" The Master said: "Grasp it before your eyes." The monk continued: "What is the Fayan school?" The Master said: "Mountains, rivers, and the great earth; the great earth, mountains, and rivers." The monk continued: "What is the Caodong school?" The Master said: "A black dog with bright silver hooves; a white elephant ridden by a Kunlun slave." The monk continued: "I do not know, what is the Venerable's own school tradition?" The Master said: "Come at another time and I will tell you." The Master then said: "Mountain clouds drift slowly; river waters stretch vast and boundless. The upright does not abide in position; the biased does not involve leaning aside. Revealed yet not exposed; hidden yet ever more manifest. The ape cries from ancient trees, its voice urgent; the crane roosts in withered pines, its dreams long."
