上堂舉僧問洞山。四山相逼時如何。山云。老僧日前。也曾向人家屋簷下過來。僧云。回顧。不回顧。山云。不回顧。僧云。未審。教渠向甚麼處去。山云。粟畬裡去。其僧珍重便遷化。山以拄杖點云。闍梨祇解恁麼去。不解恁麼來。師云。祇解恁麼去。沙禽夜宿滄洲樹。不解恁麼來。石笋穿開古路苔。諸人還體悉得麼。莫道鯤鯨無羽翼。今日親從鳥道回。

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Dongshan: 'When the four mountains press in upon one, how is it?' Shan said: 'Some days ago, this old monk also passed under someone's eaves.' The monk said: 'Did you look back or not look back?' Shan said: 'I did not look back.' The monk said: 'I wonder, where did you tell him to go?' Shan said: 'Into the millet field.' That monk said 'Take care' and immediately passed away. Shan tapped with his staff and said: 'The ācārya only understands how to go like this, but does not understand how to come like this.'" The master said: "'Only understanding how to go like this'—the sand bird roosts at night in the tree by the grey islet. 'Not understanding how to come like this'—the stone bamboo shoot breaks through the moss on the ancient road. Do all of you thoroughly comprehend? Do not say the kun-fish and whale lack wings; today, they return directly from the bird path."
