上堂云。道綿綿兮用也不勤。道綿綿兮寂也不滅。二椉困墮於空無。眾生執迷於分別。菩薩區區於進修。諸佛嘮嘮於演說。諸禪德。一句子妙出三椉。一念閒功超萬劫。水月茫茫兮舟棹閑。雪雲冉冉兮路岐絕。明明靈靈兮唯已自知。大辯若訥兮大巧若拙。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "The Way is unbroken, yet its function is never wearying. The Way is unbroken, yet its quiescence is never extinguished. The two vehicles are stranded and fall into emptiness and nonexistence; sentient beings cling in delusion to distinctions; bodhisattvas toil in progressive cultivation; the Buddhas chatter away in expounding and preaching. Venerable Chan monks! A single phrase wonderfully surpasses the three vehicles; a single thought of leisure transcends ten thousand kalpas. The water and moon are boundless—the boat and oar are at rest; snow clouds drift slowly—the branching roads are cut off. Brightly and numinously, only oneself inherently knows; great eloquence seems like stammering, great skill seems like clumsiness."
