上堂云。靈苗發種覺樹敷春。冷湫湫處却要溫和。乾爆爆時還須津潤。若能如是。便乃能方能圓。能曲能直。正恁麼時。如何體悉。還會麼。誌公不是閑和尚。剪刀常在臥床頭。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "The numinous sprout produces its seed, the awakening tree displays spring. Where it is chillingly cold, one yet requires warmth; when it is parched and brittle, one still needs moisture. If one can be like this, then one can be square or round, bent or straight. Right at such a time, how do you understand it thoroughly? Do you understand? Master Zhi was no idle monk; his scissors were always at the head of his bed."
