Ascending the hall on New Year's Day, a monk asked: "The old year has already departed, and the new year has arrived. I wonder, how many years old is the true person of no rank today?" The Master said: "He must also have one year added to his head." [The monk] proceeded: "If so, then he complies with the season and receives blessings." The Master said: "How is it on your part?" [The monk] said: "Directly, the wind blows and the grass bends; when water arrives, a ditch is formed." The Master said: "A hundred-year-old elder shares the night lamp." The Master then said: "Genial vapors become spring; elegant sounds accord with the pitch-pipes. Where it stands tall and dignified, one must know doors hang in the withered grove; when it comes intimately and secretly, of course blossoms open on dead wood. The golden rooster announces the dawn; the jade maiden ascends the loom. A stretch of scenery—a season for all. Just as when the season arrives, its principle naturally becomes manifest, how do you further comprehend it? Borrowing the old woman's skirt to pay New Year's respects to the old woman, buying up all the scenery without spending a coin. When it comes right in your face, do not evade it; within this person there are affinity conditions for birth. Participate!"
