Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited a monk asking Jiufeng: "What is the head?" Jiufeng said: "Opening the eyes, unaware of dawn." The monk said: "What is the tail?" Jiufeng said: "Not sitting on the ten-thousand-year bench." The monk said: "What is it like when there is a head but no tail?" Jiufeng said: "In the end, it is not precious." The monk said: "What is it like when there is a tail but no head?" Jiufeng said: "Though satiated, having no strength." The monk said: "What is it like when the head and tail directly match each other?" Jiufeng said: "Descendants gain strength; within the chamber, it is unknown." The Master said: "Splendid, venerable Chan monks! Clouds follow dragons, winds follow tigers; guests arrive home, water returns to the sea. Head and tail are level and upright; inside and outside are completely unified. Receiving attacks from eight directions—the iron ox's mechanism; at midnight the battle-array rounds out—the dark leopard transforms. Even though it is like this, it is still only the place where descendants gain strength. Just what is it like when 'within the chamber, it is unknown'?" After a long pause, he said: "Outside the door, clouds trail along the cut-off path; in the seat, being without illumination surpasses lighting a lamp."
