上堂舉。魯祖凡見僧來便面壁。南泉云。我尋常向人道。空劫已前承當。佛未出世時體取。尚不得一箇半箇。似爾恁麼驢年去。師云。魯祖為眾竭力。南泉家醜外揚。長蘆恁麼點撿。還更有人點撿長蘆麼。有點撿無點撿即且置。魯祖為人處作麼生。還會麼。無底合盤盛不盡。穿心椀子釘將來。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: Whenever Luzu saw a monk coming, he would face the wall. Nanquan said: "I usually tell people: 'Bear it before the kalpa of emptiness; realize it when the Buddha had not yet appeared in the world.' Still I cannot find one or half a person. Acting like you, [they will have to wait until] the year of the donkey." The Master said: "Luzu exhausted his strength for the assembly; Nanquan aired family ugliness outside. Changlu examines them like this—is there still anyone who examines Changlu? Whether there is examination or no examination, let that be for a moment. What was Luzu's way of helping people? Do you understand? The bottomless tray cannot hold everything; bring the bowl pierced through the center to be stapled!"
