Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "The unicorn and dragon are not deemed auspicious; pearls and jade discs are not deemed precious. When the patch-robed monk's eyes are wide open, he sees through to the stem of birth and death. The stem of birth and death: the primary meaning, the Buddhas' mind, the ancestral masters' nose. Shaolin transmits the lamp; Vulture Peak confers predictions. Accord with high, accord with low; what is this, what is that? Borrowing various causes and conditions, playing in supernatural powers. Sometimes five teachings and three vehicles; sometimes three virtues and six flavors. Sometimes the host managing wealth inside the house; sometimes concluding affairs at the front gate. Everywhere is the pure and spotless family style; in everyone is the ready-made livelihood. Right at such a time, tell me: what is that which is ready-made and enjoyed? Can you still understand it thoroughly?" After a long pause, he said: "The wind blows and the grass bends; when water arrives, a ditch is formed."
