At an informal gathering he said: "Good brothers, if we discuss this matter, for a thousand leagues there is the same wind. How could you and I be far apart? How could shapes and sounds interpose? Shore clouds lightly play with white; sandbar trees, green, contain spring. Touching phenomena reveals the fundamental light; the hundred streams share the one taste. The worlds of the ten directions are entirely my home; the myriad forms densely arrayed are nothing other than this Dharma. The whole body unhindered, letting go of the hands with nothing to rely on: when meeting as you turn about, what matter should we discuss? Do you understand thoroughly?" / After a long pause, he said, "Entering the gate with white hair, laughter adds to the snow; / Stepping ashore in blue shoes, let them be soiled by mud." / (After the acknowledgments of thanks, he spoke again:) "The claw of the wave seizes the boat, snow splashing into the void; / For ten years within my breast there has lingered a compassionate wind. / Now we meet frequently in the hall, / Entrusted amidst drinking tea, talking, and laughing. / Remember that Baofu asked Ehu: 'Our late master Xuefeng said, "At Wangzhou Pavilion I met with you; at Wushi Ridge I met with you; in front of the monks' hall I met with you." Leaving aside in front of the monks' hall for a moment, at Wangzhou Pavilion and Wushi Ridge, in what place did you meet?' Ehu walked briskly back to the abbot's quarters; Baofu then entered the monks' hall. Xuedou brought this up and said, 'The two venerable masters—well, they are right, but they only know Xuefeng's letting go, and do not see Xuefeng's holding fast.' Just as when Head Monk Jue just now exchanged greetings with the Venerable of Changlu in front of the triple gate, and at the abbot's quarters paid respects, joining palms, asking after his health, bowing, and clasping hands—everyone meeting like this is also just letting go. Tell me: at the place of holding fast, how do we meet? Do you understand thoroughly? / Crane and egret sleep side by side, treading the snow; / Startled awake by the bright moon, both are hesitant."
