At an informal gathering he said: "Good Chan worthies! Before the skull there is the original numinousness, shining through the crown of Vairocana's head flat and level. The jade horse passes the barrier just at midnight; the wooden rooster calls to the moon precisely at the third watch. Vast and desolate, traces cut off, the full dynamic action turns; clearly distinct, light emerges, illuminated by borrowing the position. Then donning tattered clothes, extending transforming hands, one joins with the boatman to flow along with the current. Brothers, this realm penetrates ancient and modern; it is a matter fundamentally inherent in all of you. It is merely because of a single thought of clinging delusion, entangled by various conditions, that you are unable to attain ease. Laboring those of prior awakening to establish gates of transformation is also merely to urge all of you to cease and desist of yourselves. Ceasing is bodhi; the supremely pure, bright mind is not obtained from others. You then know: outside the luminous curtain of night, the loom-shuttle is secretly worked; in front of the bright moon hall, the needle and thread are wondrously handled. The vast sky is like a mirror: when merit is complete, shed those three conditions; the great earth is like a cloud: the fault lies in sitting in one color. At that time, when it is turned around, everywhere is towering and prominent. Every sense-root and every sense-dust is nothing other than Buddhist work; every step and every action is a place of the Way. It is precisely fully realized, with not a hair's breadth of shifting or alteration. Arriving here, the Patriarchs have no extra Dharma to offer with their hands, and the Buddhas have no extra mind to transmit. Originally it is not in excess; how has it ever been lacking? Just as now, on the left stand all the visiting dānapatis, and on the right stand the patch-robed monks of Changlu. Why must one search and seek? At what time is Chan not complete? What need is there to repent? Where does sin come from? Naturally, conforming to phenomena one tallies with the spirit; just thus, turning back to the ordinary, one accords with the Way. Do not speak of future Buddhas bestowing predictions upon you; why trouble past Buddhas to bear witness for me? Just this present ungraspable mind of yours is precisely the constantly abiding Buddha of Immeasurable Life. If all of you, right here, penetrate from top to bottom and see through from root to branch, grasping its substance thoroughly, what matter could there be? If not yet so: / The hundred birds do not come, and spring passes again; / I wonder who the person is that has reached the hut." / (After the acknowledgments of thanks, he cited:) "The Third Patriarch asked the Second Patriarch, saying, 'I have many sinful obstacles; I beg you, Master, to repent for me.' / The Second Patriarch said, 'Bring your sins here, and I will repent for them for you.' / The Third Patriarch said, 'Searching for the nature of sin, it is completely ungraspable.' / The Second Patriarch said, 'I have finished repenting your sins for you.' / The Third Patriarch then bowed. / The master said, 'The Third Patriarch fell down of himself and stood up of himself; the Second Patriarch made a tower and knocked down a tower. Tonight, good friends from Hailing ask Head Monk Jue to seek repentance. If you also turn toward this place, mind and traces are both obliterated, and upon the body there is no wound. As soon as names and forms arise, it is washing away mud in the mud. But ultimately, how is it? / The moon is cold, the sky right at noon; / Pines are chill, dew soaking the lapel.'"
