小參云。好兄弟。行行沒蹤跡。石馬著金鞭。住住不凝停。木人敲玉戶。借功明位。用在體處。借位明功。體在用處。直饒恁麼履踐。得十成去。猶是傍參邊事。且道。不借借時。落在甚麼處。良久云。還相委悉麼。星前人臥千峯室。佛祖無因識得渠。復舉六祖問讓和尚。甚處來。讓云。嵩山安國師處來。祖云。什麼物恁麼來。讓經八年方下語云。說似一物即不中。祖云。還假修證否。讓云。修證則不無。污染則不得。師云。從來不相似。何處更著得污染來。然而擬向則觸。蹉跎則背。且道。正恁麼時作麼生。還會麼。頭長三尺知是誰。相對無言獨足立。

Rang took eight years before uttering a word, saying, "To explain it as resembling a thing misses the mark." The Patriarch said, "Does it still depend on cultivation and realization?" Rang said, "It is not that there is no cultivation and realization, but it cannot be defiled." The Master said: From the beginning, it has never been similar—where could defilement be attached? However, to deliberate is to collide; to hesitate is to turn away. Tell me: just at such a time, how is it? Do you understand? With a head three feet long, who knows who it is? Facing one another without a word, standing on a single foot.
