Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: Shizhu traveled on pilgrimage to Dongshan. Dongshan gave voice to instruction, saying, "There are four kinds of people: one speaks surpassing buddhas and patriarchs, but cannot walk a single step; one walks surpassing buddhas and patriarchs, but cannot speak a single phrase; one can speak and can walk; one cannot speak and cannot walk."
Shizhu came forth from the assembly and said, "The one who speaks surpassing buddhas and patriarchs but cannot walk a single step—he is merely tongueless, not permitted to walk. The one who walks surpassing buddhas and patriarchs but cannot speak a single phrase—he is merely footless, not permitted to speak. The one who can speak and can walk—he is merely like box and lid matching. The one who cannot speak and cannot walk—like someone severed of life seeking to live, this is the stone maiden's child wearing a cangue and carrying locks."
Dongshan said, "What about your own part, Ācārya?"
Zhu said, "On the part of all-pervading comprehension, how could preeminence be displayed?"
Dongshan said, "Just what about Minggongxiu on the sea?"
Zhu said, "Phantoms meeting each other clap their hands and laugh, haha!"
The Master said, "One word exhausts the ten directions, yet ten thousand scrolls cannot encompass it; one step traverses the eight borders, yet a four-horse chariot cannot overtake it. It is solely required that the tongueless person understand speech, and the footless person be able to walk, only then will it do. Not being able to speak and not being able to walk—there is directly no breath; what use is there? And tell me: phantoms meeting each other clap their hands and laugh, haha—what about this?" After a good while, he said, "Thought after thought clinging to all objects; mind after mind eternally severing all discriminations."
