1.55

上堂云。尋常一言半句。有時解粘去縛。有侍攃沙攃土。衲僧分上。俱為剩法。祇如言語道斷心行處滅。又作麼生。良久云。野雲收半夜。明月在中峯。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "Ordinarily, a word or half a phrase sometimes unties bonds and removes fetters, and sometimes scatters sand and throws dirt. On the part of patch-robed monks, both are superfluous dharmas. Just when the path of words is cut off and the realm of mental activity is extinguished, what then?" After a good while, he said, "Wild clouds gather at midnight; the bright moon is at the central peak."
