1.57

上堂舉。李翱相公問藥山。如何是道。山指天復指淨缾云。會麼。相公云。不會。山云。雲在青天水在缾。師云。雲在青天水在缾。幾人錯認定盤星。藥山八字轟開也。恰到而今話大行。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: Minister Li Ao asked Yaoshan, "What is the Way?"
Yaoshan pointed to the sky, then pointed to the water pitcher, and said, "Do you understand?"
The Minister said, "I do not understand."
Yaoshan said, "Clouds are in the blue sky; water is in the pitcher."
The Master said, "Clouds are in the blue sky, water is in the pitcher—how many people mistakenly fix the balance-beam star? Yaoshan blasted it wide open in all eight directions; right up to now, the story has had great currency."
