1.58

開爐上堂云。寒灰發焰舊家風。恰恰當人受用中。片雪飛來爐上盡。通身無像不同功。記得。雪峯云。三世諸佛。向火焰裏轉大法輪。玄沙云。火焰為三世佛說法。三世佛立地聽。師云。向這裏身心一如。身外無餘。說底是聽底。聽底是說底。方知道。目前無闍梨。此間無老僧。其或未然。火爐頭參取。

On opening the brazier, ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "Flames emerge from cold ashes—the old family style; precisely within the direct recipient's enjoyment. A flake of snow flies here and ends upon the stove; the whole body without image shares the same efficacy. Remember: Xuefeng said, 'The buddhas of the three times turn the great dharmacakra within the flames.' Xuansha said, 'The flames expound the Dharma for the buddhas of the three times; the buddhas of the three times stand on the ground and listen.'"
The Master said, "Right here, body and mind are one suchness, outside the body there is no remainder. The speaker is the listener; the listener is the speaker. Only then does one know: before one's eyes there is no ācārya, in this place there is no old monk. If it is not yet so, investigate at the brazier."
