1.70

上堂舉僧問護國。如何是本生父母。國云。頭不白者是。僧云。未審。將何奉獻。國云。慇懃無米飯。堂前不問親。師云。室生虛白。眼照清光。猶未是衲僧安身立命處。且道。畢竟作麼生。良久云。三更月落夜巢寒。瓊林不宿千年鶴。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: A monk asked Huguo, "What are one's original parents?"
Guo said, "The ones whose heads are not white."
The monk said, "I wonder: what should one offer to them?"
Guo said, "Attentively, riceless meals; before the hall, do not ask about kinship."
The Master said, "The room generates empty whiteness; the eyes illuminate with pure light. Yet this is still not the place where a patch-robed monk establishes his life. Tell me: ultimately, what is it?" After a pause, he said, "At the third watch, the moon sets and the night nest is cold; in the forest of jasper, the thousand-year crane does not roost."
