1.71

上堂云。虛中關捩。應處機鋒。恰恰相投。綿綿不斷。譬如聖王無為垂拱而治。賢臣出仕准政而行。心協二儀。德被萬物。便能一統天下。獨踞寰中。其如捍禦邊方。盡是臣分上事。諸人履道。還曾恁麼相應麼。良久云。妙印手持煙塞靜。當陽那肯露纖機。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "The pivotal turning within emptiness, the sharp dynamic at the place of response: fitting together precisely, continuing without interruption. It is like a sage king ruling without contrivance with robes draped, while worthy ministers take office and conduct governance in accord with policy. Mind harmonises with heaven and earth; virtue covers the myriad things. Thus one can unify the realm and sit solely at the centre of the world. As for guarding the frontiers, these are all matters within the realm of the ministers. Everyone, in your practice of the Way, have you ever harmonised like this?" After a pause, he said, "Holding the wondrous seal in hand, the smoky frontier is quiet; confronting the midday sun, how could one reveal the slightest opening?"
