1.79

上堂舉棱嚴會上十六開士。因僧浴時。隨例入室。忽悟水因。既不洗塵。亦不洗體。中間安然。得無所離。於是妙觸宣明。成佛子住。師云。心不見心。機前具眼。水不洗水。直下通身。所以道。性水真空。性空真水。清淨本然。周遍法界。祇如妙觸宣明處。作麼生體悉。莫聽別人澆惡水。要須冷煖自家知。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: The sixteen noble beings at the Śūraṅgama assembly, following the routine when the monks bathed, entered the bathhouse and suddenly awakened to the cause of water: it neither washed away dust nor washed the body; in between, peacefully at ease, they attained nothing to be detached from. Thereupon wondrous touch was clearly revealed, and they became children of the Buddha in their dwelling.
The Master said, "Mind does not see mind: have the eye before the dynamic. Water does not wash water: directly throughout the whole body. Therefore it is said: the nature of water is true emptiness; the nature of emptiness is true water; pure and original, pervasively filling the Dharma realm. Just where wondrous touch is clearly revealed, how do you comprehend it? Do not listen to others pouring dirty water; you must know the cold and warm for yourself."
