舉僧問青林。學人徑往時如何。林云。死蛇當大路。勸子莫當頭。僧云。當頭時如何。林云。喪子命根。僧云。不當頭時如何。林云。亦無回避處。僧云。正當恁麼時如何。林云。却失也。僧云未審。向什麼處去也。林云。草深無覓處。僧云。和尚也須隄防始得。林撫掌云。一等是箇毒氣。頌曰。

A monk asked Qinglin: "When a student goes straight ahead, what then?" / Qinglin said: "A dead snake blocks the great road; I advise you not to face it head-on." / The monk said: "What happens when one faces it head-on?" / Qinglin said: "You lose your life-root." / The monk said: "What happens when one does not face it head-on?" / Qinglin said: "There is also nowhere to avoid it." / The monk said: "Right at such a time, what then?" / Qinglin said: "Then you lose it." / The monk said: "I do not know, where did it go?" / Qinglin said: "The grass is deep, with nowhere to seek it." / The monk said: "The Venerable must also be on guard!" / Qinglin clapped his hands and said: "Equally, it is a poisonous vapour." / The verse says:
