舉首山示眾云。第一句薦得。與祖佛為師。第二句薦得。與人天為師。第三句薦得。自救不了。僧云。和尚是第幾句薦得。山云。月落三更穿市過。頌曰。

Shoushan instructed the assembly, saying: "Grasp it at the first phrase, and you are a teacher of patriarchs and buddhas. Grasp it at the second phrase, and you are a teacher of humans and devas. Grasp it at the third phrase, and you cannot even save yourself."
A monk said: "At which phrase did the Venerable grasp it?"
Shoushan said: "The moon sets at the third watch, passing through the marketplace."
