舉僧問仰山。和尚還識字否。山云隨分。僧乃右旋一匝云。是什麼字。山於地上書箇十字。僧左旋一匝云。是甚麼字。山改十字作卍字。僧畫一圓相。以兩手托。如脩羅掌日月勢云。是什麼字。山乃畫一圓相。圍却卍字。僧乃作樓至勢。山云。如是如是。汝善護持。頌曰。

A monk asked Yangshan: "Does the Venerable recognize characters?"
Yangshan said: "According to my capacity."
The monk then circled once to the right and said: "What character is this?"
Yangshan drew the character 'ten' (十) on the ground.
The monk circled once to the left and said: "What character is this?"
Yangshan changed the character 'ten' into a svastika (卍).
The monk drew a circle and held it up with both hands in the gesture of an asura holding the sun and moon, saying: "What character is this?"
Yangshan then drew a circle enclosing the svastika.
The monk then assumed the posture of Rucika.
Yangshan said: "Just so, just so. Protect and maintain it well."
