2.78

舉溈山問仰山。忽有人問一切眾生。但有業識茫茫無本可據。子作麼生驗。仰云。若有僧來即召云某甲。僧回首乃云是什麼。待伊擬議。向道非唯業識茫茫。亦乃無本可據。山云。善哉善哉。頌曰。

Guishan asked Yangshan, "If suddenly someone asks, 'All sentient beings merely have karmic consciousness, vast and boundless, with no basis to rely upon,' how would you test him?" Yang said, "If a monk comes, I will immediately call out, 'So-and-so!' When the monk turns his head, I will say, 'What is it?' Waiting for him to hesitate, I will say to him, 'Not only is karmic consciousness vast and boundless, but there is also no basis to rely upon.'" Shan said, "Good! Very good!" The ode says:
