3.12

舉蓮華菴主拈拄杖示眾云。古人到這裏為什麼不肯住。眾無語。自代云。為他途路不得力。復云。畢竟如何。又自云。楖𣗖橫擔不顧人。直入千峯萬峯去。師云。負入不負出。本色住山人。思大吞盡諸佛。普眼不見普賢。且道。病在什麼處。驀拈拄杖卓一下云。官不容針私通車馬。

[The Master] cited the Hermit of Lianhua holding up his staff and instructing the assembly: "Why were the ancients unwilling to stay when they reached here?" The assembly was silent. He answered for them: "Because on that path they gained no strength." He added, "In the end, how is it?" He answered for them again: "Carrying the short staff horizontally across the shoulders, paying no regard to anyone, going straight into the thousands and myriads of peaks." The Master said, "Bearing it in, not bearing it out—an authentic mountain dweller. Master Si swallowed all the buddhas; Samantacakṣus could not see Samantabhadra. Tell me, where is the illness?" Suddenly grasping his staff, he struck once and said, "The official does not permit a needle, but privately carts and horses pass through."
