[The Master] cited: Xuansha instructed the assembly, saying, "Every quarter says they guide beings and benefit life. If suddenly three kinds of sick persons were to come, how could one guide them? For one suffering from blindness, holding up a mallet or raising a fly-whisk, he does not see it. For one suffering from deafness, the samādhi of speech, he does not hear it. For one suffering from muteness, telling him to speak, he cannot speak. If one cannot guide these people, the Buddha Dharma has no efficacy." A monk asked Yunmen for instruction. Yunmen said, "Make a bow." The monk made a bow. Yunmen prodded him with his staff; the monk retreated. [Yunmen] said, "You do not suffer from blindness." He called him to step forward again; the monk stepped forward. Yunmen said, "You do not suffer from deafness." He then said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." Yunmen said, "You do not suffer from muteness." At this, that monk had an awakening. The Master said, "Yunmen unfolded it plainly, and this monk replied in earnest. Tell me, where was his awakening? An incurable disease is hard to treat with needles and moxibustion."
