舉：「玄沙示眾云：『諸方老宿盡道接物利生，忽遇三種病人來，作麼生接？患盲者拈槌竪拂他又不見，患聾者語言三昧他又不聞，患瘂者教伊說又說不得，且作麼生接？若接此人不得，佛法無靈驗。』」有僧請益師，師云：「爾禮拜著。」僧禮拜起，師以拄杖便挃，僧退後，師云：「爾不是患盲。」復喚近前，僧近前，師云：「爾不是患聾。」乃竪起拄杖云：「還會麼？」僧云：「不會。」師云：「爾不是患瘂。」其僧於此有省。

[Yunmen] brought up [the following]: "Xuansha addressed the assembly, saying, 'The venerable elders everywhere all speak of accommodating beings and benefiting living creatures. If suddenly three kinds of sick people come, how will you accommodate them? For one suffering from blindness, if you pick up the mallet and raise the whisk, he does not see them; for one suffering from deafness, the samādhi of words he does not hear; for one suffering from muteness, if you tell him to speak, he cannot speak. How then will you accommodate them? If you cannot accommodate these people, the Buddha Dharma has no efficacy.'" A monk asked the Master for instruction. The Master said, "Make your prostrations." When the monk rose from prostrating, the Master jabbed him with his staff. The monk stepped back. The Master said, "You are not suffering from blindness." He then called him forward. The monk came forward. The Master said, "You are not suffering from deafness." He then raised his staff and said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "You are not suffering from muteness." At this, the monk had an awakening.
