舉陳操尚書與眾官。樓上遙見數僧從遠來。官云。數員禪客。陳云不是。官云。焉知不是。陳云。待與驗過。僧至樓下。陳云大德。僧舉首。陳云。不信道不是。官罔措。師云。陳尚書當面白拈。瞞長蘆一點不得。

[The Master] cited: Minister Chen Cao and other officials saw from a tower several monks coming from afar. An official said, "A few Chan guests." Chen said, "They are not." The official said, "How do you know they are not?" Chen said, "Wait until I test them." When the monks reached the base of the tower, Chen said, "Great Virtues!" The monks raised their heads. Chen said, "Didn't I say they are not?" The officials were at a loss. The Master said, "Minister Chen stole openly in broad daylight, but he cannot deceive Changlu in the slightest."
