舉雪峯在洞山作典座。一日淘米次。山問。淘砂去米。淘米去砂。峯云。砂米一時去。山云。大眾喫箇什麼。峯便覆却盆。山云。子他後別見人去在。師云。雪峯祇管步步登高。不覺草鞋跟斷。若也正偏宛轉敲唱俱行。自是言氣相合。父子相投。且道。洞山不肯雪峯意。在什麼處。萬里無雲天有過。碧潭似鏡月難來。

[The Master] cited: When Xuefeng was serving as the cook for Dongshan, one day while washing rice, Dongshan asked, "Do you wash away the sand and leave the rice, or do you wash away the rice and leave the sand?" Xuefeng said, "Sand and rice are washed away together." Dongshan said, "What will the great assembly eat?" Xuefeng then overturned the basin. Dongshan said, "In the future, you will go and see someone else." The Master said, "Xuefeng merely climbed higher step by step, unaware that the heels of his straw sandals were broken. If bias and uprightness curve and adapt, and striking and singing proceed together, speech and energy naturally accord, and father and son harmonize. Tell me, where does Dongshan's disapproval of Xuefeng lie? In a cloudless sky of ten thousand miles, there is still a fault; when the blue pool is like a mirror, the moon is hard to reflect."
