Ascending the hall, [he] cited: A monk asked Zhaozhou, "What is the meaning of the ancestral teacher's coming from the West?" Zhou said, "At the end of the year, [we] do not burn paper money." The Master said: Tiantong cannot help but tear it open for you today: an aged and venerable great lineage master, his words from the beginning without commemorative stele, yet he says, "At the end of the year, [we] do not burn paper money"—what ancestral teacher's coming from the West are you looking for? Grinding and washing away every flaw; chewing without flavor. Seen from the cold ground, there is no trick: the ancient Buddha Zhaozhou was a bit [superior]. What is the place where Zhaozhou was a bit [superior]? Do you not see it said: Not practicing Chan, not discussing doctrines, / Spreading a torn mat, sleeping in the sun. / I suspect that even in Tuṣita Heaven above, / There is no sun warming the back like this. If someone suddenly came out and asked, "Can I sleep like that too?" I would just say to him, "I fear you have never even dreamed of it."
