上堂舉僧問睦州。高揖釋迦。不拜彌勒時如何。州云。昨日有人問。趕出了也。僧云。和尚恐某甲不實。州云。拄杖不在。苕菷柄聊與三十。師云。好大眾。驅耕夫之牛。奪飢人之食。方有宗師手段。天童不免。隨後讚歎去也。凜凜將軍令已行。八荒四海要澄清。提來劍氣干牛斗。洗蕩氛埃見太平。

Ascending the hall, [he] cited: A monk asked Muzhou, "How is it when making a high bow to Śākyamuni and not bowing to Maitreya?" Muzhou said, "Someone asked yesterday, and I drove him out." The monk said, "The Venerable fears that I am not genuine." Muzhou said, "The staff is not here, so for now I give you thirty [blows] with the broom handle." The Master said: Fine assembly! Driving off the plowman's ox, snatching away the starving man's food—only then is there the method of a lineage master. Tiantong cannot help following up with praise: Sternly the general's order is already issued; / The eight wildernesses and four seas must be made clear. / Drawing the blade, its vapor clashes with the constellations; / Scouring away the dust, great peace appears.
