Ascending the hall, [he] cited: One day Changsha was reading the Sūtra of Great Buddha Names. A scholar asked, "The names of the hundreds of thousands of buddhas are seen, but I wonder, what lands do they dwell in?" Changsha said, "After Cui Hao wrote his poem on the Yellow Crane Tower, did you ever write a poem, scholar?" The scholar said, "I have not." Changsha said, "When you have nothing to do, it would be fine to compose one." The Master said: When having nothing to do, compose one! / I do not fall behind others. / Carefree and unconstrained, thinking of the great gulp; / Mellow and thick, the Bai family wine. / While drunk, still claiming lips have not been moistened; / When asked by someone, waving the hand again. / Not waving the hand: / An intercalary month every three years; counting nine after the winter [solstice].
