4.120

街坊設乳粥上堂。乳粥當年得善生。心開成道見明星。而今各各恁麼去。猶較瞿曇半月程。諸禪德。莫是初八念三相較麼。莫是前佛後佛相較麼。莫是他聖我凡相較麼。若是箇漢。亡前後斷古今。混聖凡一同異。直須恁麼去。還委悉麼。而今悟道見明星。便是如來喫粥處。

Upon the neighborhood offering milk-rice porridge, [Hongzhi] ascended the hall: "That year, receiving the milk-rice porridge from Sujātā, with mind opening, [the Buddha] attained the Way upon seeing the morning star. If now each of you proceeds like this, you are still half a month's journey behind Gautama. Worthies of Chan! Could it be comparing the eighth day [of the twelfth month] with the twenty-third? Could it be comparing former buddhas with later buddhas? Could it be comparing that holy one with this ordinary person? If you are such a person, obliterate before and after, sever past and present, blend holy and ordinary into one identity and difference, and straightaway proceed like this! Do you understand? Right now, awakening to the Way and seeing the morning star—this is precisely the place where the Tathāgata ate the porridge."
