上堂舉。金剛經中道。是法平等。無有高下。是名阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。師云。高者高下者下。大者大小者小。青者青黃者黃。方者方圓者圓。作麼生說箇是法平等底道理。諸人一切時如何行履。得真箇無高下去。其或未然。強為錐剳去也。人平不語。水平不流。嘉州大象陝府鐵牛。莫怪扶桑最先照。大都家住海門洲。

[Hongzhi] ascended the hall and brought up: "In the Diamond Sūtra it says: 'This Dharma is level and equal, without high or low; this is called anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi.'" The Master said, "What is high is high; what is low is low. What is large is large; what is small is small. What is green is green; what is yellow is yellow. What is square is square; what is round is round. How do you speak of this principle that 'this Dharma is level and equal'? How do all of you conduct yourselves at all times so as to genuinely attain the state without high or low? If you have not yet done so, I will force an opening with an awl: People being level do not speak; water being level does not flow. The great elephant of Jiazhou, the iron ox of Shan Prefecture. Do not wonder why Fusang is illuminated first—mostly because their home is on the island at the sea's mouth."
