上堂僧問記得。僧問趙州。如何是祖師西來意。州云。庭前柏樹子。未審此意如何。師云。驀口便道不要商量。僧云。若謂當時曾有語。可憐辜負趙州心。師云。爾莫是待與覺鐵觜出氣麼。僧云。只如今又欠少箇甚麼。師云。料掉勿交涉。僧云。和尚且道。趙州即今在甚麼處。師云。爾問阿誰。僧禮拜。師乃云。風不鳴條。雨不破塊。會不會兮還信采。廓廓落落兮大方無外。跛跛挈挈兮大功不宰。穩穩密密兮心安如海參。

[Hongzhi] ascended the hall. A monk asked, "I recall that a monk asked Zhaozhou, 'What is the meaning of the Ancestral Master's coming from the West?' Zhaozhou said, 'The cypress tree in front of the courtyard.' I wonder, what is this meaning?" The Master said, "Directly say: No discussion is needed." The monk said, "If one says that back then there were words spoken, it is pitiful to let down Zhaozhou's mind." The Master said, "Could it be that you are waiting to vent your anger on Iron-Mouth Jue?" The monk said, "Just right now, what is lacking?" The Master said, "It is unrelated, of no concern." The monk said, "May the Venerable tell us: where is Zhaozhou right at this moment?" The Master said, "Whom are you asking?" The monk bowed. The Master then said, "The wind does not whistle through the branches; the rain does not break the clods. Whether understanding or not understanding, just follow the occasion. Broad and open, the great square has no exterior; limping and halting, the great function does not govern. Steady and intimate, the mind is at ease like the sea. Take part!"
