Ascending the hall, he cited: A monk asked Venerable Zhiman, 'What is the Buddha?' Zhiman said, 'Treading through straw sandals and walking barefoot.' 'What is the matter beyond the Buddha?' Zhiman said, 'Carrying the sun and moon on the tip of a staff.' The Master said: Treading through straw sandals and walking barefoot; carrying the sun and moon on the tip of a staff. Zhiman truly attained the ancestral house style, letting loose Yunmen's broad and long tongue. Great wisdom seems like folly; great skill seems clumsy. Having exhausted all effort, still not thoroughly investigated—do not pile mounds upon flat ground, stop driving stakes into empty space!
