上堂僧問記得。僧問夾山。如何是真實之理。山云。石生無根草。山含不動雲。此意如何。師云。暗中移步。明裏藏身。進云。可謂是虛中不墮。應處亡痕。師云。也須是十成本色漢始得。進云。學人請問和尚。如何是真實之理。師云。青青黯黯處回。明明歷歷處轉。師乃云。正晝熱深夜涼。氷壺誰復到中央。身心直許摩雲月。脾肺都將洗雪霜。莫守一色處。莫坐萬年床。玉人轉側機捘動。細辨裏頭偏正方。

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: 'I remember a monk asking Jiashan, "What is the true and real principle?" Jiashan said, "A stone grows rootless grass; the mountain contains an unmoving cloud." What does this mean?' The Master said, 'Stepping in the dark; hiding the body in the light.' The monk advanced and asked, 'Can this be called not falling into emptiness, and leaving no trace where one responds?' The Master said, 'You must be a fellow of ten-tenths genuine color before you can do so.' The monk advanced and said, 'The student invites the Venerable to answer: what is the true and real principle?' The Master said, 'Returning where it is dark and dim; turning where it is distinct and clear.' The Master then said: In broad daylight it is hot; in the deep night, cool. / Who again reaches the center of the ice vase? / Body and mind directly permitted to brush clouds and moon; / Spleen and lungs completely washed with snow and frost. / Do not keep to the place of a single color; / Do not sit upon a ten-thousand-year bench. / The jade person turns and shifts, the mechanism moves; / Carefully discern the biased and upright square within.
