Ascending the hall, he cited: A non-Buddhist asked the Buddha, 'I do not ask about what has words; I do not ask about what is wordless.' The World-Honoured One remained silent for a good while. The non-Buddhist said, 'The World-Honoured One with great loving-kindness and great compassion has dispersed the clouds of my delusion, allowing me to gain entry.' After the non-Buddhist withdrew, Ānanda asked the Buddha, 'What did that non-Buddhist realize?' The World-Honoured One said, 'Like an excellent horse in the world, running upon seeing the shadow of the whip.' The Master said: A single phrase transcends: the shadow of the whip to an excellent horse. / The Way surpasses speech and silence; the principle accords with square and circle. / The wondrous skill of wielding the axe—guest and host are both admirable; / The wheelwright's craft cannot be transmitted between father and son. / Do not use the divinatory hexagrams to seek the tortoise shell; / The moment you fall into right and wrong, in what donkey year will the matter be done?
