上堂舉僧問巖頭。古帆不挂時如何。巖云。後園驢喫草。師云。不展事不投機。不徇緣不答話箇是出格轍。脫窠臼漢做處。諸人作麼生委悉。平生肝膽向人傾。相識猶如不相識。

Ascending the hall, he cited: A monk asked Yantou, 'How is it when the ancient sail is not hoisted?' Yantou said, 'In the back garden, the donkey eats grass.' The Master said: Not putting forth affairs, not suiting the dynamic; not yielding to conditions, not answering the words—this is the doing of a fellow who transcends the rut and sheds the nest. How do you all comprehend this? Pouring out one's heart and gall to someone throughout life; / Though acquainted, it is just like not being acquainted.
